The role of women in colonial America was a very influential one. Women worked from sun up to sun down because there was always work to be done (Searle, 2007). Women were responsible for many tasks including preparing food, creating goods to be used in the home and being a wife and mother. The woman was the glue that held a family together. The work of women in colonial days was daunting and difficult. The only time that the work load on women was lightened was on Sunday due to religious responsibilities (Twin Cities, 2004). They had much work to do and little rest from the burden of their daily tasks. To be a house wife in colonial times “seemed to take the strength of Hercules, the skill of Tubal Cain, and the patience of Job (Holliday, 1960).” The work of women in colonial American was essential, without them the colonies would not have survived and prospered to become the country that it is today.
